The Moment We Knew We Had to Make a Change
One sentence changed everything after 6th grade graduation.
After 6th grade graduation, everything shifted.
There were a lot of events leading up to that day that I won’t unpack here. Like many families, we had concerns. We had conversations. We tried to work within the system.
But there was one moment that made the decision clear.
Tab and I were sitting one-on-one with a member of the school administration. It wasn’t a dramatic meeting. It wasn’t angry. It was calm.
And then we heard the sentence that changed everything:
“What are you going to do with Skyler next year? Because he will not survive in middle school.”
Not, “Here’s how we’ll support him.”
Not, “Let’s build a plan together.”
Not, “We’re committed to helping him succeed.”
He will not survive.
That’s the moment.
The moment a parent realizes the system may not be built for their child.
You can feel it in your chest.
You can feel it in your gut.
You stop debating.
You stop hoping it will fix itself.
You start looking for something better.
On March 4, 1681, King Charles II granted William Penn the charter for what became Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania was founded on the idea of freedom.
Including the freedom to choose differently when something isn’t working.
