The Final Countdown: Is Your Family Ready for Back-to-School?
Backpacks are easy to pack. Routines take a little more work—but they’re one of the best gifts we can give our kids.
This morning, I read a news story about school districts across Pennsylvania holding back-to-school celebrations to help students get ready for a new year.
I’ll share the article at the end because I think it’s worth reading.
But it got me thinking about something a little different.
Not school supplies.
Not backpacks.
Not lunch boxes.
Routines.
If you’re anything like me, summer has a way of changing the schedule.
Bedtimes get a little later.
Sleeping in becomes normal.
Breakfast might happen whenever someone wanders into the kitchen.
There’s nothing wrong with enjoying summer. In fact, I think we should.
But August is also when we start looking ahead.
I remember trying to make that transition with my own kids. We didn’t wait until the night before school started.
A couple of weeks before the first day, we’d begin moving bedtime back a little at a time.
Then came the practice week.
The alarm would go off.
Get up.
Get dressed.
Eat breakfast.
Pack what needed packed.
Be ready to walk out the door.
Almost like a dress rehearsal.
It wasn’t perfect, but it made that first real morning a whole lot less stressful.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized something else.
Kids do better when they’re part of the plan.
Instead of saying, “Here’s your bedtime,” ask, “What do you think will help you feel ready for school?”
Instead of telling them exactly what has to happen, let them help build the routine.
Give them ownership.
When kids understand the “why,” they’re much more likely to buy into the “what.”
That doesn’t mean parents stop being parents.
It just means we’re coaching instead of only directing.
Those little conversations can build confidence before the first bell ever rings.
We’re getting close now.
The countdown to a new school year has started.
Whether your child is heading to a neighborhood public school, a public cyber charter school, a charter school, a private school, or learning in another setting, every family benefits from a little preparation.
Maybe tonight’s conversation isn’t about homework.
Maybe it’s simply asking your child:
“What do you want your mornings to look like this school year?”
You might be surprised by the answer.
And while you’re making those plans, don’t forget our August Adventures challenge.
Take one more family adventure before the school year gets busy.
Visit that museum.
Read that historic marker.
Support a small business.
Grab some ice cream.
Make one more memory.
Summer isn’t over yet—but the next chapter is getting closer.
