Small Steps, Big Heartbeats: A Monday Update from Shadyside
For those just tuning in—and for those walking with us every step of the way.
It’s Monday, and I’m heading back to UPMC Shadyside a little later than usual today. Yesterday, Bella came with me for a visit, and it was one of those moments that just hits you in the chest. Seeing her with Tabby—seeing the recognition, the spark, the love—it made my heart feel a little lighter. The roles were reversed, but the bond was still strong.
For those just catching up: Tabby was admitted to the ICU just over a week ago with a serious neurological issue. She was placed on a ventilator, underwent a spinal tap, and has been under close watch in the Neurological Care ICU (NCICU) ever since. It’s been a whirlwind—one that started in the ER on a Saturday and quickly became a week of uncertainty, tests, and waiting.
But today, we’re seeing small steps forward. Tabby is off the ventilator and breathing on her own. She’s still sedated, but she’s becoming more responsive—nodding to questions, reacting to familiar voices, and showing signs of awareness. The staff is hopeful she’ll be able to sit in a chair soon, which is another step toward recovery.
And now, I think it’s time to bring in a little more light.
If you’ve been wondering how to help, here’s something simple but powerful: send Tabby an eCard. UPMC has a free service that delivers printed messages right to her room. I know she’d love to hear from you.
