Bridging the Divide: Healing and Building Relationships at IEP Meetings
Pennsylvania Coalition of Public Charter Schools Conference 2024
On October 10, 2024, we hosted a transformative session at the Pennsylvania Coalition of Public Charter Schools Conference titled "Bridging the Divide," led by Tabby and Jim from Candy Apple Advocacy. The session focused on essential strategies for healing and fostering strong, collaborative relationships between administrators, teachers, school staff, and families during Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings.
We emphasized that schools and families are on the same team, working together for the benefit of the students. Discussions centered on building cooperative rather than oppositional relationships and understanding the backgrounds of families—many of whom have experienced trauma or are new to special education. Providing support and reassurance was highlighted as critical to making families feel welcomed and understood.
Key Topics Included:
Healing past traumas and moving forward together
Building collaborative relationships between families and school staff
Educating families on the support available to them
For those who couldn’t attend, we have provided access to the presentation slides here.
Together, we are creating a supportive and inclusive educational environment for all students.
